Total mobility
You could be eligible for big discounts on taxi fares. We tell you how.
Total Mobility is a nationwide scheme designed to increase the mobility of people who have difficulty using public transport. Eligible clients get 50% discount on door-to-door transport (usually by taxi) in many urban areas.
A book of vouchers is issued to each client, and one voucher is redeemed at the completion of each trip. Clients pay the other half of the fare to the taxi driver.
Total Mobility is funded by district councils and the NZ Transport Agency and administered by regional councils, so there may be local variations.
Joining Total Mobility
Contact an appropriate Total Mobility agent. These are a range of community groups which help their members access the scheme. Your local council may have a list of local agents.
You will need an eligibility assessment to ensure you meet the national eligibility requirements set by the Transport Agency. There may be a charge for this.
Many local Age Concerns are Total Mobility agents and can help members with the scheme, including mobility assessments and the required ID.
Eligibility
Basically, you're eligible if physical, sensory, intellectual or psychological disability means that you can't proceed to and from a public transport stop; or board, ride and disembark from the public transport unaided.
