Respect each other - Let's say no to elder abuse and neglect

We took part in the sixth annual international campaign to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect. 

Age Concern elder abuse and neglect prevention services, other providers and Age Concern New Zealand marked the international awareness day on 15 June 2011 and the days after with a range of events and activities to combat elder abuse and neglect.

Age Concern New Zealand released new publications to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect aspects and to help people facing EAN.

June 13 – 18 – Competition - Poems and Pictures -What I would like my life to look like when I am 80.”

The Mayor will be at the Tauranga Library  judging this Intermediate school competition on 15 June at 11am.  All  winning entries will be displayed in the Tauranga library – please go and check these out.

 

On June 15 Age Concern will have two stalls, one in town and the other at Bayfair, handing out purple ribbons and information on elder abuse – so please come up and make yourself known.

 

From June 13 - 17 Tauranga District Health Board Staff will have information and resources available on Elder Abuse and Neglect at the hospital.  On June 15 there will be a manned stall at the hospital so go along and receive information and resources from the DHB staff who work with older people.

Hamilton

Public event with guest speakers from HAIP, DSL, Rauawaawa Trust and other providers and stories from older people enjoying life without abuse.

Time 10-1pm Morning tea available with opportunities to be ‘pampered’.

Tairawhiti

Korero with Tikitiki Men’s and Kaumātua group featuring the Tairawhiti Abuse and Intervention Coordinator as guest speaker.

Taupo

Two activities:

  1. A walk from our Civic centre with students, grandchildren, older people, dogs, mobility scooters.  The walk will end with morning tea and a DVD showing.
  2. A Seniors’ Expo.

Hawkes Bay

Display of Art work at Hastings Age Concern centre by junior students of St Josephs Primary - theme is 'Respecting & Reflecting on the older people in my life".

Feature in Hawkes Bay Today on Saturday 11 June plus information on Radio Kidnappers.

On Wednesday 15 June, a private event will be held for older people, with singing by St Joseph’s junior school students and senior students serving refreshments. 

Manawatu

The Clock Tower in the Square will be lit up purple and all the councillors will be wearing their purple ribbons for the day;

Celebrating with Best Care Whakapai Hauora Kaumatua by supporting the first Manawatu Ha Kinakina (Kaumatua Olympics) and are hosting a pamper party for Kuia on the Saturday before their Po Whakangahau (Winter Ball).
